Pregnenolone is an endogenous steroid and precursor/metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of most steroid hormones, including progestogens, androgens, estrogens, glucocorticoids, and mineralocorticoids. Pregnenolone and its 3β-sulfate, pregnenolone sulfate, like DHEA, DHEA sulfate, and progesterone, belong to the group of neurosteroids found in high concentrations in certain regions of the brain, where they are synthesized. Neurosteroids influence synaptic function, exert neuroprotective effects, and enhance myelination. Pregnenolone and its sulfate ester improve cognitive and memory functions.
